Remakes

With a drought of new story ideas, Hollywood is hellbent in doing remakes. An improvement of the originals, or a downright mockery?

Starting at 1:00 p.m. on August 13 (second Saturday of the month), pelikula@titusbrandsma (24 Acacia St., Bgy. Mariana, New Manila, Quezon City) presents some of the films that Hollywood has recently ventured to remake:

"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"
"Oldboy"
"L'Appartement" ("The Apartment")

Bonus shorts to be screened after the first feature film are:
"Interstate" and
"KMart Confidential"

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Mel Stuart, USA, 1971.
100 minutes.

From the classic Roald Dahl story comes this magical, lip-smacking delight of jolly tunes and pure imagination. Young, impoverished Charlie Bucket wins a coveted golden ticket to enter the fantastic realm of Wonka's mysterious confectionery run by his Oompa-Loompa crew. There, Charlie, his grandpa and others discover that a kind heart is a finer possession than a sweet tooth. It is the film's willingness to risk a darker tone -- to show that even a wonderland like Wonka's can be a weird and dangerous place if you're a bad kid -- that makes this an enduring family classic, a favorite children's film around the world, and an adored black comedy/musical. Tim Burton's 2005 remake with Johnny Depp recently topped the U.S. boxoffice charts for two weeks.

Nominations: 1972 Oscars - Best Music, Scoring Adaptation & Original Song Score; 1972 Golden Globes - Best Motion Picture Actor - Musical or Comedy (Gene Wilder).
